Nice to see Woo-ping come back to some street fighting as opposed to wirework (not that I'd ever complain about the wirework). Adkins is a really terrific racist gweilo bad guy even if I think it's weird that there's apparently no military discipline whatsoever in this movie's Marines (his righteous Wing Chun-practicing victim/subordinate never even bothers to call his antagonizing DI "Sir"). The whole thing is revisionist Chinese propaganda of course, which makes it doubly funny to me that it's being offered up in some corners as a corrective to Tarantino's portrayal of Bruce Lee, but that's a whole other conversation. Anyway I could watch Donnie Yen do the ass-kicking sage thing all day long, and this is that.

Between this and Wolf Warrior everyone in China is gonna fucking hate Scott Adkins lmao.
The Ip Man movies are just pure China and wing chun propaganda at this point but this is China and wing chun propaganda done entertainingly. Wilson Yip said Ip Man 4 is mainly a continuation of Ip Man 3 and that for better or worse applies to the quality of it as well. It’s less of a "good movie" in the traditional sense like Ip Man and Ip Man 2 but more in the sense that you get to see fucking DONNIE YEN VS SCOTT ADKINS BABY FUCK YEAH. I can’t tell you how great it is to (finally) see Adkins on the big screen…

If I back down, I'm no longer Chinese.
I am not denying the fact that I had a huge huge expectation from this final chapter, and felt it didn't go well. This chapter should have been a more detailed version of his further life as it was the final one. It didn't look like a finale, it looks like just another chapter.
This film mostly deals with Master Ip's relationship with his son and setups for his better future and the connection with Bruce Lee (maybe because of public demand). As a cameo, Bruce Lee's part went well, but the father-son relationship things didn't. Also, wanted to see more actions from Master Ip, but got only 2 (and a half…

Not nearly as flashy as the others, The Finaleboasts a more back to basics approach as far as fight setpieces go, and but that’s not a complaint—I think it compliments the added ‘this is the end’ drama quite nicely... plus the fights are still eye bangers and Donnie Yen continues to be fantastic.
Then we get a scene chewing Scott Adkins going all in as a bigoted scumbag racist military dickbag—with heightened viciously brutal moments in every scene he’s in... almost cartoonish (but not in a bad way) as he sells needle dick garbage tuff guy filth like a boss with his pulsating wide eyed crazed fury anger. Lots of satisfying moments here, including several tense scenes revolving around a…

And here I thought "Ip Man 3" felt digressive and soap opera-like! "The Finale" has its predecessor beat in that regard—for one thing, there's a subplot about a bullied cheerleader—but damn if I didn't get a little emotional when Ip Man steps into the ring to defend the honor of kung fu. There's something about this character as personified by Donnie Yen that's become iconic as a protector of the oppressed; it still works even after four films. And then we have Scott Adkins clearly having a blast playing a drill sergeant so over the top, even R. Lee Ermey would tell him to calm down.

This marks the first film I saw in a theater in 2020.
Set in the 1960s, Ip Man (Donnie Yen) travels to San Francisco to try to find a school for his son. On the way, he encounters Bruce Lee (Kwok-Kwan Chan) who is portrayed here better than in Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood and Wan Zong Hua (Yue Wu), the man who is able to give his son a recommendation to get into a top school but is too hesitant.
There is some stunning choreography and a heart-felt story. The story explores different forms of fighting including karate, kung fu, and Wing Chun (an offshoot of kung fu). There were great characters, including Yonah (Vanda Margraf), a Chinese-American who is bullied at school.

Ip Man is the role Donnie Yen was born to play. Obviously his fighting ability is superb, but Yen's performance is always perfect in other areas, and he's able to convey a lot in silent moments just through his physicality.
Ip Man 4: The Finale is not the best film in the Ip Man series, which has really stretched history in an attempt to create a blockbuster biographical franchise, but it is a suitable finale. Ip Man is older and he is shown as flawed, moving beyond depictions of him as a perfect person. Similarly, Bruce Lee is presented as nuanced in his principles and attitudes, something which recent films have pretty much sought to belittle (*cough* Tarantino *cough*). This…

Review by Luca ★★★ 1
For some reason in this series the quality of each movie in the series seems directly tied to how much of propaganda it is. This was the third best in the series and also the third most propaganda-ey. The action in this film was a really good in-between of the first and second, and the story was far more coherent than the third.

I've enjoyed the previous 3 films in the Ip Man series. When I heard that a 4th one was going to be made, even though it felt like a cash-grabbing venture, I still got excited about seeing Donnie Yen reprise the role for a final time. Little did I know that this fourth film would be just as much a weapon of nationalistic propaganda as it is a way to earn some quick cash for its stars and crew.
Ip Man 1,2 and 3 were made in the years prior to the extreme tightening of nationalist tendencies in modern Mainland China. Those films, while undoubtedly patriotic, referenced historical events and trends that are undeniably relevant to the course of Chinese…

👌🏻 3.2 / 5 👌🏻 — Ip Man 4: The Finale showcases some of the most spectacular one-on-one fights in the entire series, but overall, the earlier entries still outshine this concluding chapter.
Ip Man 4: The Finale boasts some of the best fight sequences in the franchise, though the story doesn't quite match the narratives of its predecessors until its final moments. Watching the Bruce Lee fight and seeing Donnie Yen face off against Scott Adkins provides some of the most exhilarating action in the Ip Man series. For kung fu enthusiasts, this series is an absolute gem. However, after witnessing Donnie Yen's vibrant charisma in Rogue One and John Wick: Chapter 4, his stoic portrayal of Ip Man,…
